SOUP DU JOUR: PRIMORDIAL SOUP

IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE

Introducing Primordial Soup, our Spring Special made and christened in the name of the science experiment that was the making of this tie-dye collection.

A little fun fact about me: before my last-minute decision to go to art school, I was in the process of applying to UC Davis to study chemistry and botany 🤓 So naturally, I felt like a cool experimental scientist as I cooked up this primordial tie-dye soup with gloves, tongs, little pots of Japanese dye, giant vat of boiling water and all.

The whole setup had me all excited over the idea of mixing my own colors and using previously dyed strings to make contrasting lines in the material. I used a single batch of water in my giant aluminum pot, starting out with a pure green and continuously adding little bits of blue and violet between dye bundles to get just the right periwinkle by the end. The results were, as always, fascinating and hypnotizing.

These are officially my new favorite Japanese dyes. They yield such bright, yet clear tints - like watercolors! Hope you love the results as much as I do because I'll definitely be back in the lab (kitchen) cooking up more goodies soon👩🏽‍🔬🎨
